Relocation & Arrival

Austra Health will provide you with all the information you'll need in order to make your relocation to Saudi Arabia as smooth as possible.

Prior to your departure you will receive your ‘Final Package' containing all original documents, your passport, Saudi Arabian visa and travel documents, such as flight details and hotel vouchers.

Arriving in Saudi Arabia

Upon arriving in Saudi Arabia, you will be met at the airport by a hospital representative, who will escort you to your housing within the hospital compound.

A general hospital orientation is provided for all new employees during the first few days of employment.  Nursing candidates will also undergo further orientation in order to be familiarised with the hospital wards.  You will also obtain your Saudi Arabian Nursing Registration during this period.

Dress on Arrival

Conservative western dress is required upon landing in Saudi Arabia.

It is recommended women wear:

  • Trousers and a sleeved shirt, or
  • Mid-calf length skirt, and a sleeved shirt, or
  • Mid-calf length sleeved dress.

Men are advised to wear long trousers and a short-sleeved shirt or t-shirt.  Shorts and sleeveless t-shirts (tank-tops) are not acceptable.

Dress whilst in Saudi Arabia

When outside the hospital compound, women are required to wear an abaya over their normal clothes.  This is not necessary on the hospital grounds, where you will be able to wear conservative western clothing.

You will generally not be required to wear a headscarf outside of the hospital grounds however we advise that you carry one with you in case you are asked to wear one by a Saudi local.

For men, the dress code is conservative.  There are fewer restrictions for men however; shorts, singlets, and bare-chests are not acceptable in public.  The only jewellery that should be worn is a watch and/or a wedding ring.

Money

Your monthly salary will be paid in arrears at the end of each month, so it is advisable to take enough money with you to cover any expenses until your first salary installment is paid.  It is a good idea to take Saudi Riyals with you; if this is not possible, we recommend that you take US dollars, as you will be able to exchange these for Riyals upon your arrival.  US$600 should be a sufficient amount to cover any expenses until you receive your first pay.

When shopping in Saudi Arabia, cash is the preferred method of payment for purchases.  Major credit cards are widely accepted in shops as well as restaurants and hotels.
