A few simple steps in the right direction
In the professional engineering and technical fields, the task of looking for a new position or getting that chance to work on a new project can seem daunting. It can be difficult to differentiate yourself from the five other people who are also interested in applying for the same position.
Bill Rendall, Recruitment Consultant for Environment & Water says, "There are many things that you can do to ensure you are positioning yourself correctly against other candidates."
While there are less competing for jobs, it is still a highly competitive market and it is essential to be selective with the positions that you apply for and the networks that you utilise.
"Approaching one or two committed Recruitment Consultants can be an effective way to target particular industries or organisations you are interested in," says Bill. They often have knowledge and networks that are not available to the general public, and can therefore help you find the right position.
"We encourage applicants to think about the type of work they enjoy and what environment they prefer to work in. Providing this information prior to going through the interview process will save time and frustration," explains Bill.
If you are working with a recruitment consultant, there are some important things that you must remember to communicate to ensure the best result for you:
- Be clear with what you would like from your next position; provide information on desires, topical experiences and salary expectations.
- Explain your current position and role responsibilities
- Do not apply for everything you feel is of interest, allow your chosen consultant time to make enquiries and help you choose the best positions for you
- If you are interested in a role that requires skills you do not have, indicate an enthusiasm to gain the skills or a keenness to work within the organisation in a suitable alternative role.
- Make yourself available and flexible when arranging interviews
- Do not use searching for a job as simply a means of obtaining a pay increase from your current employer. This will only damage your credibility with your employers, your Recruitment Consultant and the credibility of your Consultant with their client.
When applying for that next position, these are just some of the things that will set you apart from the rest. A career is a journey, not a destination ending!
