Interviewing the Employer
As a prospective employee, it is just as important to interview a company as it is for a company to interview you.
Recruiters now place as much emphasis on your work motivations and cultural fit as they do on essential skills, experience and knowledge. As an applicant, you want to feel positive about the prospect of working for a particular organisation.
The only way to do this is to know what you are looking for and understand how you like to work. As a job seeker, you need to be clear about the type of work you enjoy and what environment you prefer to work in. Endeavouring to source this information prior to going through the interview process will save time and frustration.
Just as you are an individual, companies have different corporate cultures and expectations of their employees. Determine the type of people you enjoy working with most and be honest about the type of role that works for you. Do you enjoy a hands-on, operational workplace? Do you enjoy working within precise systems and procedures or would you prefer a more innovative and relaxed environment? Do you have a preference to work in a large firm or a small family based company?
Once you have discovered what you want to do, you will need to find out about the company's culture. Some questions that may assist you in discovering the culture of a workplace are:
- Can you describe your company culture?
- How does your organisation recognise employee accomplishments?
- What leadership style does the Manager employ?
- Is formalised training and development encouraged?
- What are the company's main objectives for the coming year?
Other useful ways to gather information is to check out the company website, talk to people in the office, walk around the premises during the interview stage and pay attention to the working conditions and environment.
By making sure that you are well matched to a company, you will increase the likelihood of enjoying and being successful in your new role.
